An Important Milestone

ROBERT HUGILL was at
Grange Park Opera's 'Tristan and Isolde'

For their first venture into staging Wagner, Grange Park Opera chose regular visitor David Fielding to design and direct Tristan und Isolde (seen Saturday 11 June 2011), with Stephen Barlow conducting. The opera house at Grange Park is a relatively small house in which to stage Wagner, but it is worth bearing in mind that the German court opera houses in which Wagner worked (pre Bayreuth) tended to be on the small size. Tristan was Richard Berkeley-Steele, familiar for his English National Opera Siegfried, and Isolde was Alwyn Mellor. Unfortunately, for this second performance of the production, Mellor was ill and could not sing the role. Luckily Berkeley-Steele is married to the dramatic soprano Susan Bullock and she was free, so that Bullock sang Isolde from the side of the stage whilst Mellor acted...
