André de Ridder first came to my attention six years ago as the Hallé Orchestra's Assistant Conductor. Now, with his five years as Sinfonia Viva's Principal Conductor soon to come to an end, he was back with the Hallé to open the Royal Concert Hall's 2011-12 season (Nottingham, UK, 30 September 2011).

A fairly steady tempo for the opening of Josef Suk's Fantastic Scherzo brought out the music's rustic overtones, echoed in the appealing freshness brought to bear on the central pastoral episode...
