Purcell, Warlock, and Britten are probably our finest song writers, all three with a wondrous sensitivity to the subtlest inflexions of the English language. The combination of Britten and Hardy is powerful indeed. The great novelist turned poet packs a wealth of emotion into textures where not a word is wasted. Loneliness is so often his theme, the aloneness that only humans fully comprehend, and that nature largely ignores...
