Puccini's La bohème is based on the writings of Henri Murger (1822-1861), who is best known for describing the day-to-day life endured by struggling artists in Paris during the 1840s. Murger first worked as a messenger, but lost his job because he spent too much time chatting with his artist friends. He then began writing stories about those friends and his tales were serialized in Le Corsaire beginning in 1845. Rodolphe was based on himself...
