Giacomo Puccini was a famous composer by the time he wrote Madama Butterfly. His first opera, Le Villi, was a success at La Scala in 1884, so in 1889, his second, Edgar, was staged there as well. Unfortunately, it failed miserably. His Manon Lescaut was a commercial success at Turin in 1893, however...
