Gounod's 'Faust',
reviewed by MIKE WHEELER

I know I'm going to get it in the neck from some quarters for this, but Opera North's new production of Gounod's Faust (Theatre Royal, Notingham, UK, 20 November 2012) was a brave attempt to make something interesting out of a not very interesting opera. Yes, there are some pretty tunes and fine orchestration along the way, but it doesn't seem to add up to much.

Directors Ran Arthur Braun (who also designed the production) and Rob Kearley set the opera in a fast-moving urban contemporary world...
