'Tosca' at AZ Opera,

Giacomo Puccini and his librettists, playwright Luigi Illica and poet Giuseppe Giacosa, based their opera Tosca on Victorien Sardou's 1887 French-language dramatic play, La Tosca. The opera takes place in Rome in the year 1800 when Napoleon's invasion of Italy threatened the Kingdom of Naples' ability to control the city. This was Puccini's first foray into verismo, which features realistic depictions of the darker and seamier side of life...
