Exhilaratingly Refreshing

Yutaka Sado and the BBC Philharmonic,
heard by MIKE WHEELER

 

Japanese conductor Yutaka Sado has evidently made a big impression on the players of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, who clearly enjoyed working with him (Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, UK, 28 February 2013).

Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio Espagnol got a suitably bold, colourful performance, with characterful solo playing, though perhaps the brass and percussion were allowed their head just a bit too much at times for ideal balance. And what a pity the first and second violins were not separated left and right, to make the most of their antiphonal exchanges in the fourth movement...
