Whenever Franz Liszt traveled, he carried two books with him: Goethe's Faust and Dante's Divine Comedy. He eventually wrote symphonic music that pertained to each literary masterpiece. Both pieces were premiered in 1857. The composer finished the Dante Symphony during the early fall of that year and the work was premiered at the Hoftheater in Dresden on 7 November...
