These are enjoyable performances of pleasing, undemanding works by composers far better known for their orchestral music. The Strauss sonata was premiered in 1887 when he was in his early twenties and not yet a prominent figure. Respighi's was written thirty years later at the age of thirty-eight, one year after he achieved his first big success with the Fountains of Rome. Although three decades separate the two sonatas, there is little difference in the musical language...
