One of the great things about Andris Nelsons' conducting is that he knows when to step back and just let the players and singers get on with it. Time and again he would be just standing, apparently doing nothing for a few moments, before moving forward again to give a bit of extra steerage when needed (Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, UK, 28 June 2013).

In response the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Chorus came up with a thrilling performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony that combined a sharp focus on key individual moments with a firm grip on the shape of the whole...
