Beautifully Judged
Ravel for piano duet,
heard by MIKE WHEELER
Pascal and Ami Rogé's short recital of music by Ravel for piano duet was a perfect complement to the sultry weather outside (Buxton Festival, Pavilion Arts Centre, Buxton, UK, 16 July 2013)
Both advertised works are more familiar in their orchestral versions. Inevitably there were losses in terms of instrumental colour, but in performances as sensitive as these, not as much as you might think, and even some unexpected new facets.
Rapsodie espagnole opened with a 'Prélude à la Nuit' full of finely shaded nuances while, in 'Malagueña' the Rogés even managed to suggest affinities with Domenico Scarlatti...
