Ben Bloor's command of
the Derby Cathedral Organ
Having shared the limelight with his four colleagues at the start of this year's series, Ben Bloor got the place to himself for this impressive solo recital (Derby Cathedral, Derby, UK, 31 July 2013).
Whatever the true origins of the D minor Toccata and Fugue, BWV 565, long attributed to J S Bach, it was refreshing to hear it treated like piece of music and not just a flashy display vehicle. Above all it was Bloor's rock-steady sense of rhythm that underpinned his engagement with the music's substance rather than its surface...
