Katherine Jenkinson and Ning Kam open
Derby Chamber Music's new season,
heard by MIKE WHEELER

 

Cellist and Derby Chamber Music patron Katherine Jenkinson kick-started the society's new season with violinist Ning Kam in a programme with its fair share of virtuoso thrills and spills, but with musical substance as well (Multi-Faith Centre, Derby University, Derby, UK, 20 September 2013).

The two of them opened with a transcription of one of three clarinet and bassoon duos attributed to, but probably not by, Beethoven. After an impetuous start with a few rough edges, the performance quickly settled in to an elegant account of charming but not particularly memorable music...
