A Pleasant Surprise

Fauré, Britten and Franck in Cleveland,
heard by SUZANNE TORREY

This concert [Sunday 13 October 2013, Cleveland Orchestra, Severance Hall, Cleveland, Ohio, USA] proved to be a pleasant surprise in many ways. While it's not usually a problem to present one lesser known work within a program, none of the three pieces on the roster today were in the common repertoire. It was wonderful to see Severance Hall three quarters full on a Sunday afternoon and to note that there were so many families taking advantage of the orchestra's 'Under 18s Free' initiative, which gives a free ticket to a youngster ages 7-17 accompanying an adult. Everyone was well-behaved, no watch alarms or cell phones going off, which is so often the case during the evening performances...
