Ensemble

Magnificently Sonorous

Brahms, Dvorák and Rimsky-Korsakov
from the Derby Concert Orchestra,
heard by MIKE WHEELER

Brahms wished he'd known that you could write a cello concerto like Dvořák's. So his Academic Festival Overture, a thank-you present to Breslau University for giving him an honorary degree, was a apt curtain-raiser to his protege's masterpiece. Derby Concert Orchestra and conductor Jonathan Trout gave the opening an air of suppressed excitement, and 'Gaudeamus Igitur' rang out with gusto at the end (Derby Cathedral, Derby, UK, 15 March 2014)...
