Chemist and composer Alexander Borodin began to plan his first opera in 1869. Critic Vladimir Stasov sent him a scenario based on a twelfth century East Slavic epic prose poem, The Lay of Igor's Host. Borodin replied saying, 'Your outline is so complete that everything seems clear to me. It suits me perfectly, but will I manage to carry out my task to the end?'
