Cristian Mandeal conducts the Hallé Orchestra,
heard by MIKE WHEELER

 

Just two weeks after its stunning performance of Mahler's Ninth Symphony, the Hallé Orchestra was back with a glittering array of orchestral showpieces to end the current season at Nottingham's Royal Concert Hall (Nottingham, UK, 15 June 2014).

I've sometimes been critical of Cristian Mandeal's conducting in the past, but this was the kind of programme in which he seems particularly at home. In Ravel's Alborada del Gracioso he coaxed from the players sonorities of quite remarkable gleaming clarity, and in La valse balanced to potent effect the work's menace (heightened by a slowish beginning) and glamour...
