'Phew!' muttered someone sitting near me, as the Hallé and conductor Mark Elder rampaged their way to the end of the third movement of Mahler's Ninth Symphony. It was a comment that could apply equally to the performance as a whole (Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, UK, 27 May 2014)...
