A Luminous Experience

The Derwent Singers perform music by
Fauré, Tallis, Byrd, Gabrieli, Eric Whitacre
and John Rutter, heard by MIKE WHEELER

 

Building their latest concert around Fauré's Requiem (St Osmund's Church, Derby, UK, 18 October 2014), the Derwent Singers and conductor Richard Roddis chose a first half of pieces echoing its central image of eternal light.

They brought a rich sound to Tallis' O Nata Lux, sung from the back of the church. Textures were clear in O Lux Beata Trinitas by Byrd and Gabrieli's Jubilate Deo, though occasional moments lost focus, and here and elsewhere some soprano high notes were not dead-centre...
