Beethoven's first two piano concertos deserve better than to be side-lined as little more than imitation Mozart. They are nothing of the kind, as pianist Francesco Piemontesi, the Hallé Orchestra and conductor Cristian Macelaru demonstrated (Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham UK, 24 November 2014).
Piemontesi's first entry had a sparkling freshness aided by the crystal clear sonorities of his chosen Fazioli piano, and echoed by the orchestra's lucid texture and colours...
