Firstly, hearty congratulations to DGG for extracting a contract from Grigory Sokolov to issue a recording of a live concert from the 2008 Salzburg Festival — no mean feat considering this pianist's determined refusal to enter the recording studio. Indeed, Sokolov's strong aversion to the notion reminds one of Glenn Gould from the not too distant past. Notwithstanding this not too common mindset, Sokolov's playing is mesmerizing throughout, and his Chopin Preludes have a poignancy and sweetness that is rarely achieved...
