Mykola Lysenko, regarded as the father of Ukrainian classical music, was born in March 1842 in a village near the Dnipro river. His father came from an aristocratic family; his mother, a Ukrainian, was educated in St Petersburg, and never spoke with her native tongue. Indeed, Ukrainian was considered a peasant language at the time, and his mother set him a programme to study French, apart from dancing, etiquette and piano. It is indeed a mystery how a boy with such an upbringing could become an ardent patriot later in life...
