Musical Integrity

Sunwook Kim and the Hallé
Orchestra play Rachmaninov,
and impress MIKE WHEELER

Nottingham's Royal Concert Hall launched its new orchestral season with a programme that looked, on paper, like a temptation for solid musical values to take a back seat in favour of surface glitter (Nottingham, UK, 26 September 2015). But, of course, the Hallé Orchestra and conductor Mark Elder know better than that. The overture to Glinka's Ruslan and Lyudmila, for instance, often seems to be treated like an invitation to an attempt on the land speed record. This performance was brisk and exuberant without the need to turn the piece into a white-knuckle ride...
