Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius has become something of a calling-card for Derby Bach Choir. I make this their fourth performance in the last sixteen years, but there was never any danger of familiarity breeding a sense of routine in this gripping account (Derby Bach Choir, Derby Cathedral, Derby, UK, 7 November 2015).

Conductor Richard Roddis ensured that every expressive base was covered in the Prelude, and that orchestral details such as the two brief passages of stopped-horn writing made their effect...
