Having opened the Metropolitan Opera with Mariusz Trelinski's production of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, General Manager Peter Gelb began the 2016-2017 season of Met in HD transmissions to cinemas on 8 October 2016 with the same opera. A co-production of the Metropolitan Opera, Baden-Baden's Festival Hall, the Polish National Opera, and China's National Centre for the Performing Arts, Trelinski's updated staging is thought provoking.
Tristan is an ancient Celtic legend and Trelinski tweaked it a little bit as he turned it into a morality play for modern times. Swords turned into guns and sails became motors...
