Balletic Energy

Britten, Korngold and Berlioz

the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra
impresses MIKE WHEELER

Korngold's Violin Concerto may not be the greatest in the repertoire, but Vilde Frang's performance with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and conductor Nicholas Collon (Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, UK, 21 October 2016) was one of those occasions when you find yourself re-assessing a work. She is a player who can rivet your attention while barely whispering into her instrument, and her quiet opening to the first movement was instantly compelling. Her search for something much more elusive kept the full-on Hollywood romantic surge for when it really paid off...
