Passing Time

Opera North's 'Der Rosenkavalier',
reviewed by MIKE WHEELER

Der Rosenkavalier may be the title, but it's the figure of the Marschallin around whom everything and everyone in Strauss's opera revolves. In Opera North's revival of the production by David McVicar (staged by Elaine Tyler-Hall; Theatre Royal, Nottingham, UK, 16 November 2016), Ylva Kihlberg returned to the company following outstanding recent appearances as Janáček's Emilia Marty and Jenůfa. The voice may not always have been quite big enough, with an occasionally intrusive vibrato, but she was a compelling presence, full of natural, unforced authority, charting every fluctuation of joy and heartbreak, and making her meditation on passing time at the end of Act I deeply moving...
