BEAUTIFULLY JUDGED
Brahms, Beethoven and Nikolay Kapustin from Julian Clef, heard by MIKE WHEELER
Born in Kerala State, India, pianist Julian Clef started playing the piano at the age of six, but only began formal lessons at sixteen, which makes his subsequent career as a student at Chetham's School, the Royal Northern College of Music and the Guildhall School, followed by masterclasses with Peter Donohoe, Andrei Gavrilov and András Schiff, all the more remarkable.
He is clearly not one to avoid out-of-the-way repertoire, either, on this occasion following Brahms and Beethoven with contemporary Russian Nikolay Kapustin. (Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, UK, 28 October 2018.)
