'Adriana Lecouvreur' -

'... a chorus and orchestra beautifully responsive to the lyrical nuances of Cilea's score.'

Shots from above and below of the soaring Sydney opera house dominate the start of this Opus Arte DVD, with background Adriana motifs as harbinger of delights to come. Time was when Australian singers flocked to London and became mainstays of the Covent Garden and Coliseum casts. A main pleasure of mine, years ago in 1972, was to conduct an all-Australian team in a concert performance of Fidelio. A joy to work with, they seemed a permanent fixture on the London scene until Sydney flung open its arms. Then, with one accord, they fled. Our loss is all too obvious from this admirable performance of an opera seen here far too seldom.
