<<  -- 4 --  Robert Anderson    CRUELTY SCORNED

-------------------------------

The pasha decides otherwise. He learns that Belmonte is the son of the man who ruthlessly exiled him from his native land. He scorns such cruelty and will by no means emulate it. So the incredulous and bewildered captives must be set free, and Mozart's bewitching vaudeville is the pasha's instant reward [watch and listen -- chapter 25, 140:12-141:23]. Morally the day is Allah's, as the janissaries loudly proclaim. The Turks must nurse their broken hearts as best they may while EuroArts, their cast, the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra and chorus can join the conductor Gianluigi Gelmetti in a final curtain meriting maximum applause.

Conductor Gianluigi Gelmetti acknowledges Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart at the end of Mozart's 'Die Entführung aus dem Serail'. Behind him, left to right, Malin Hartelius, Hans Peter Blochwitz and Ruth Ann Swenson. DVD screenshot © Schwetzinger Festspiele/SWR/NHK/Maran Film GmbH
