It remains for Strauss to display the summit of his art in a trio for Octavian, the Marschallin and Sophie that I would defy anyone to hear with dry eyes. Carsen stages it beautifully, and the music's magic compels Bychkov to a tempo perhaps a touch slower than Vienna or Salzburg are used to [watch and listen -- DVD2 chapter 14, 50:04-51:51]. The young lovers decide apparently for a night in the brothel under the protective eye, one hopes, of the transvestite keeper of the establishment. If mine host has become Mrs Warren, who cares? Everything has ended happily, and maybe even so for little Mohamed, still enjoying a spot of leave somewhere in Africa.
