-------------------------------

Characters are introduced one by one, and individual singers give a slant on how, with assistance from John Pascoe as director, they conceived them and moulded them towards performance. But at the outset we see the stage already steeped in political and amorous controversy, with a castful moving confidently at the dictate of many a devious emotion [watch and listen -- chapter 1, 0:12-1:32]. If there is an innocent abroad -- and the main female character is just such an idealist -- her altruism gets many a sceptical knock; the lobbyist, though, with twirling parasol, worms her way to an abundance of secrets and is already an accomplished artist at what is now mainstream government activity.
