Jenufa is Karita Mattila's signature role and she portrays the character's growth from a coquettish young girl to a mature woman who has learned to survive tragedy and loss. She sang with clear tones and robust dramatic emphasis. Kostelnicka was sung most expressively by Eva Urbanova, a fine actress who showed several aspects of this sometimes black and white character, making her motives credible and comprehensible.

Jorma Silvasti was a good looking powerful voiced playboy who eventually snagged the richest girl he could find. As his half brother, Laca, Kim Begley sang passionately and flew into a jealous rage when Jenufa rebuffed him. Grandmother Buryja was sung with polished tones by Elisabeth Bishop who readily convinced the audience of her advanced age.
