-------------------------------

The whole cast enters with zest into the high spirits of Rossini's squib; indeed Fanny's enthusiasm may on occasion take her higher than the composer intended. The large stage gives ample opportunity for comic exaggeration in gesture and movement, but the polar bear ensures decorum enough. The Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano and Trento under Umberto Benedetti Michelangeli is above praise, precise and dashing where required, yet seductively lyrical where the young Rossini demands. Playful snatches of Mozart from the resourceful harpsichord continuo are easy enough to identify; but that I leave to you.
