Andrew Massey

English-born American conductor Andrew Massey was mostly active in the USA. Born on 1 May 1946, he studied at Oxford University and at the University of Nottingham, and spent six years as a senior music lecturer at Middlesex University before emigrating to the USA in 1978 to take up the post of assistant conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra.

Later he was the seventh music director of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, from 1991 until 2001, continuing for a year afterwards as principal guest conductor. His time with the orchestra included performances of Berlioz's Grande messe des morts, Britten's War Requiem, Elgar's The Dream of GerontiusBeethoven's Choral Symphony, Mahler's Symphony No 3 and contemporary music by John Adams and Toledo composer Stanley Cowell.

He died at home in Vermont on 1 June 2018, aged seventy-two, following a long battle with cancer.
