Johann Wenzel Stamitz

The Bohemian composer and violinist, Johann Wenzel Anton Stamitz was born on 18 June 1717 and baptised the following day at Nemecký Brod. He played in court orchestras in Europe and generally influenced standards of performance. As a composer, Stamitz was prolific: his fifty symphonies bear testimony to innovative structural development. He died in Mannheim on 27 March 1757, aged thirty-nine, and was buried three days later.
