musiques sans frontières

The French-based international festival Fête de la Musique (launched in 1982) takes place each year on 21 June, the date of the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere. In 2000 more than a hundred countries took part, and the Fête embraced many different types of music.

Advertised as 'musiques sans frontières', an unexpected turn of events hindered the removal of one of these frontiers. The choral finale of Beethoven's 9th Symphony was performed in cities across Europe, but Iran (a country celebrating it's first Fête) had to cancel its performance of the Ode to Joy because Islamic law does not allow women to perform in public.
