Innovation Ensemble
A new string ensemble was launched during September 2002 with concerts in Birmingham (14 September) and London (19 September). The Innovation Chamber Ensemble is a group of sixteen string players and comprises principal players of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. The ensemble performs without a conductor and is designed to be suitable for venues not large enough to accommodate a full symphony orchestra. The first concert included Barber's Adagio, Elgar's Serenade for Strings, and the Boccherini Cello Concerto played by CBSO soloist Richard Jenkinson, the Innovation Ensemble's Artistic Director, who also plays Kodaly's Cello Sonata. These works, together with new pieces by Paul da Vinci and the popular British light music composer Robert Farnon, are included on a new CD to be issued this autumn on the Blue Rhythm label.
