Brahms and Stanford from The Sitwell Singers,
heard by MIKE WHEELER
The recent interest in Brahms' German Requiem in the version with piano duet has opened up a new, intimate, angle on the work. The Sitwell Singers' performance (Derby Cathedral, Derby, UK, 2 April 2011) took this fully on board and even suggested the work's roots not just in Brahms' baroque and Renaissance predecessors but also in the nineteenth-century part-song repertory.
Their hushed first entry was beautifully prepared...
