Puccini's 'Il Trittico',
reviewed by ROBERT HUGILL

The Royal Opera House has added to Richard Jones' well received production of Puccini's Gianni Schicchi in order to create a complete Il Trittico. This month's performances of the trilogy at Covent Garden (seen Saturday 17 September 2011) represent a rare UK outing for the complete trilogy. Working with three different set designers, Jones created a well modulated trio of operas, each production creating a particular atmosphere and mood so all three contrasted and combined into a satisfying whole. Producing Il Trittico complete is quite an undertaking, with a large cast and three hours of music (nearly four hours in the theatre), but this production has shown that by presenting all three operas together as Puccini intended, they do create a profoundly satisfying whole which is greater than the sum of its parts...
