Fascinatingly Varied

The Eblana String Trio and David Curington
at Derby Chamber Music, reviewed by MIKE WHEELER

 

The Eblana String Trio and oboist David Curington, all from the Royal Northern College of Music, joined forces in a fascinatingly varied programme for Derby Chamber Music (Multi-Faith Centre, Derby University, Derby, UK, 11 November 2011) which opened with a beautifully flowing account of Mozart's Oboe Quartet. They found a touching air of restrained sadness in the second movement, and their playing in the third movement was a deft combination of relaxed playfulness and precision.

Gerald Finzi's Prelude and Fugue for string trio may not be typical of the composer in its form, but the musical language is totally characteristic...
