The Piatti String Quartet,
heard by MIKE WHEELER

 

With their clean, open sound, airy textures and ready responsiveness to changing dynamic levels, the Piatti String Quartet brought refreshingly individual takes on three mainstays of the repertoire (Derby Chamber Music, Multi-Faith Centre, Derby University, Derby, UK, 2 December 2011).

The celebrated introduction to Mozart's 'Dissonance' Quartet was not quite as dark as usual, but without short-changing the music's sheer strangeness. In the second movement the players combined graceful lyricism and profound searching, there was dancing elegance in the Minuet, and the harmonic side-slips in the finale were negotiated with precision and minimum fuss...
