In 'Quires and Places where they sing' there was no need for an English musical renaissance. A lively tradition going back to before the Elizabethan age continued with more or less distinction until the present day. In the concert room it was very different. Handel and Mendelssohn cast such mighty shadows as to inhibit native work and impose a yawning chasm between Purcell and the late Nineteenth Century...
