Former and present French cellists are in plentiful supply -- among them: Gautier Capuçon, Pierre Fournier, Paul Tortelier, Maurice Gendron, Andre Navarra, Sophie Rolland, Jean-Guihen Queyras, Emannuelle Bertrand, Philippe Muller, Gérard Hekking and Frederic Lodeon. Francis Gouton's principal teachers and mentors spanned peninsula Europe -- ie French maestro Pierre Fournier (1906-1986), the Hungarian-American Janos Starker (born 1924 in Budapest) and Maria Kliegel (born 1952, Dillenburg, Gießen, Germany).

In the 1990s Gouton kept busy in mainstream classical, jazz, standards, tango and pop with 'Typhoon 4', an acclaimed piano quartet, featuring Iwao Furusawa, violin, Paul Coletti, viola, Gouton, cello and Phillip Bush, piano.

By 2007, Gouton was appointed Professor at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Trossingen; Baden-Württemberg, Germany...
