If the Telemannic output of more than three thousand works causes initial stupefaction, it is as well to remember he was easily outdone by Simon Sechter, who almost taught Schubert counterpoint some sixty years later. The Harmonischer Gottes-Dienst (1725-26) is a set of seventy-two cantatas for every Sunday and festival of the church year. Telemann managed at least twenty such cycles. The 'vol 1' of the title refers neither to Telemann's publication of the cantatas, which came out in three volumes, nor to Bärenreiter's four, but to the practicalities of recording, and mainly the choice of obbligato instrument...
