This [9 February 2012, Barbican Hall, London, UK] was the LSO and Kristjan Järvi letting their hair down, from John Adams' delightful 'The Chairman Dances' from Nixon in China, to the double bass member unobtrusively making his way from one side of the stage to the other in order to feature as electric bass with piano. The trumpet, clarinet and saxophone sections -- not to mention the percussion! -- seized their chances with both hands, with Philip Cobb on trumpet and Lorenzo Iosco on bass clarinet absolutely outstanding.

The Bernstein works (Three Dance Episodes from On the Town plus Prelude, Fugue and Riffs, which is less well-known) glittered, with Kristjan Järvi compensating for his lack of inches with his masses of flair...
