Soulful Intensity

Bellini's 'Norma', reviewed by MIKE WHEELER

Opera North's new production of Bellini's Norma (Theatre Royal, Nottingham, UK, 22 February 2012) is a co-production with Theater Chemnitz. Director Christopher Alden's setting is a close-knit nineteenth-century religious community. It projects a vivid sense of a people united and inward-looking in the face of poverty and oppressive wealthy landowners -- top-hatted and black frock-coated Pollione and Flavio, to whom they pay their dues with undisguised hatred...
