Andrew Gourlay and the Hallé Orchestra,
heard by MIKE WHEELER

 

Assistant Conductor Andrew Gourlay was at the helm of the Hallé Orchestra in the final concert of the season at Derby's Assembly Rooms (Derby, UK, 30 May 2012). Opening with Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No 1 (the one for piano, strings and trumpet) was an imaginative gambit that worked excellently. Pianist Martin Roscoe and Hallé Principal Trumpet Gareth Small sparred to lively effect, and explored a vein of tender lyricism in the second movement...
