Several years ago, when Luc Bondy's production of Tosca opened the Met season, its appropriately aggravated reception prompted me to write an article comparing several productions of various operas I had seen in an effort to discern what works on stage. The article comprised analyses of eight operas from a wide range of companies, such as La Scala, Covent Garden and the Metropolitan Opera, as well as several well-known directors, such as Anthony Minghella, David McVicar, and Willy Decker.
